WHAT IS AN ACCREDITED EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST (AEP)?

AEPs specialise in clinical exercise interventions for persons who have, or are at high risk of developing, a chronic medical condition. AEPs are allied health professionals and specialists in their field of preventing or managing chronic disease and optimising physical function, health and well-being, by means of exercise interventions.

WHAT SERVICES CAN AN AEP PROVIDE?

AEPs assess, prescribe, supervise and monitor exercise and lifestyle programs designed to achieve specific health outcomes for individuals with a broad range of pathological conditions. Working in collaboration with the general practitioner and the patient’s healthcare team, AEPs will prescribe and deliver an exercise program, taking into consideration your current medical status, to ensure your intervention is both safe and effective. Their approach may involve a supervised one-on-one session, or it may be group-based. AEPs will work with you, providing motivation and support, as they deliver your exercise-based intervention. Additionally, they will seek to develop your skills to ensure that you are able to exercise safely and independently, when ready.

WHY SHOULD YOU SEE AN AEP?

AEPs are experts in prescribing the right exercise to help you maximise your function and health-related outcomes and/or to prevent/manage your chronic disease.
